Review : A Vintage Affair - Isabel Wolff - June 2010

If you are like me and could spend hours wandering around a vintage clothing store admiring all the clothes of the era's gone by , then this book is definitely a read that you won't want to miss and I'm not just saying that because it is written by one of my favourite female authors , if I was then you would be seeing this on the majority of my reviews :).
A Vintage Affair tells us the story of Phoebe Swift, whom after a tragic accident had what can only be described as a life -changing moment , an epiphany. They say that once a tragedy that has happened especially one is close to you can leave an effect so strong that it encourages almost pushes a sense of having to re-evaluate your lives and the directions you are headed.
For Phoebe Swift, her tragic moment was the death of her friend Emma , the tragedy spurned her to leave her job of 12 years , break off her engagement from the man she was going to marry and led her to open her own shop -Village Vintage.
From the opening page, we are presented with the makings of Phoebe's shop as she has her opening in the first/second chapters . It is just before the opening that we meet the first of the main characters Dan - the un-organized and spontaneous newspaper reporter who seems to have a thing for Phoebe , but as you will read it takes her a long time to figure things out. The next character we meet is Annie , her part time shop assistant/actress - a lovable character that I can imagine being a jolly lady who is a sweet and cheerful assistant. The third main character is Miles - he is the one Phoebe will date on/off and it will leave the readers thinking ok is she going to choose Miles - rich and wealthy or Dan - a bit of a fun weirdo?.
About Half-way through the book we are introduced to Mrs Therese Bell , a customer who is selling her clothes to Phoebe. These two will form a relationship that will leave you laughing and crying in places as they both come to terms of the guilt they have been carrying for years.
A Vintage Affair is a story that anyone needing a love pick-me-up will enjoy as it is about meeting new people , overcoming guilt and the age old tale "It's not your fault" rings true in the book and discovering that the people you care about are the ones right under your nose and that are there for you when you don't even realise it.
