Review: The Gathering - Book #1 Darkness Rising Series - Kelley Armstrong - April 2011
First off, this is another one of those books that had two different covers, I had the cover of the right hand side but personally I prefer the blues to the green/grey cover. Which one do you enjoy ? For those who had read Kelley Armstrong's previous books , you may be in the same boat as me and in two minds about this book. As someone who has read everything and enjoyed everything that Kelley has written, I was a little disappointed but in saying that the disappointment was very minute as I struggled a bit with the storyline as the novel starts out with the death of Serena - Maya's best friend and then it jumps to a life without Serena and unlike novels in the past it doesn't until later on in the book give you a time limit e.g 3 months later. We then read as a reporter comes into town but that is shortlived as the reader only gets a taste of why she is there and then we have the story of Maya and her friends and then to complete it the story of Maya herself. I found that the book contained alot like Inception where it was a dream inside a dream inside a dream , The Gathering was like a story within a story within a story etc , as it had about 3-4 different plots occuring. However in saying that, the story overall was an interesting read as Maya discovers the truth behind who she really is and what her birth parents were and why she is like she is. A great novel for teens and a series that I can't wait to read the next installment as to see what direction Kelley pulls.
