Review: My Big Fat Low Fat Wedding - Katya Starkey -2013
My Big Fat Low Fat
Wedding is a futuristic tale which centres on the run –up to Emily Gilliam’s impending
nuptials to her long-term boyfriend Callum. As her wedding approaches, Emily
becomes increasingly focused on her size; dieting and over-exercising in order
to look her best for her big day. Her hang up about her curves is not helped by her fitness
mad personal training mother –in-law to be and Emily begins to feel more and more
pressured to lose weight : as if being slimmer is the only way she can enjoy her forthcoming wedding. Yet this is no ordinary matrimonial saga; in her
path from “Yes” to “I Do”, Emily additionally has to contend with murderous
malfunctioning robots which are slowly taking over her town, blackmail and
being stalked by a young gym worker called Thomas. Will Emily get her happy ever after or robots
aside, will she be skinny enough to walk down the aisle?
This was a very
quirky read which was extremely different to the normal wedding sagas which I
have read in the past. It was an unusual
plot although an interesting one and was fast paced with plenty of humorous
moments. I think a lot of females can relate to Emily, as invariably the
planning of a wedding can overtake people’s lives and the book shows, in a
rather offbeat manner, how often the bride to be can lose sight of what the actual
marriage celebration is about and instead turn into “Bridezilla”; becoming all
consumed in their quest to have the perfect day.
A nice, light
albeit slightly off the wall read.
